About this speaker
Alan is a veteran of 16 total solar eclipses, having seen the moon cover the sun from locations at the ends of the Earth, from both the Arctic and Antarctic, and from the air and at sea. He has been a night photographer since the film days, with an emphasis not just on eclipse photography, but also nightscapes, Milky Way and deep-sky images.
He is co-author of the popular guidebook for amateur astronomers The Backyard Astronomer’s Guide (2021), published by Firefly Books, and the e-book How to Photograph the Solar Eclipses. He is a frequent contributor to Sky & Telescope magazine, authoring equipment reviews and buying guides. Asteroid 78434 is named for him.
